Cheyenne (Sean Penn), un facoltoso ex-divo del rock, apprende che il padre è malato e sul punto di morire. Corre quindi da lui nella speranza di riconciliarsi ma arriva troppo tardi. Solo nel periodo che segue realizza quanto ebbe a soffrire il padre – tra i pochi sopravvissuti ad Auschwitz – per mano di un criminale nazista, l’ufficiale delle SS Aloise Lange. Deciso a vendicarlo, si mette alla sua ricerca, ma il viaggio lo porrà di fronte a un percorso di autocoscienza e di riconciliazione che richiederà, in finale, delle scelte…
